As per the Ministry of Labour & Employment, the minimum wage for highly skilled drivers in the central sphere is Rs. 1,200 per day or Rs. 31,200 per month (26 working days) effective January 1, 2026. Overtime is paid at twice the ordinary rate for hours beyond 8 per day. This applies to establishments like central government transport undertakings.

Applicants must be at least 20 years old, pass Class 10, and hold a valid Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) license issued after passing the driving test. A medical certificate confirming fitness, including no night blindness, is required and valid for 2 years if under 50 years old. No prior experience is mandated for entry-level but 1 year preferred for goods vehicles.

Under the Motor Transport Workers Act 1961, drivers work maximum 8 hours per day or 48 hours per week, with overtime pay at double rate. They get 12 days annual leave after 240 days of work and 10 days casual/sick leave per year. Weekly rest is 30 continuous hours including Sunday.
